I've got that nausicaa edition, pretty decent though I wish they were properly bound and were cloth instead of paper.
What are the other miyazaki books like?
>>
>>9885564
I... probably wouldn't be close friends with you.. acquaintances sure.. but everything from the weeb/nerd vibe to the total lack of books I'm interested in beyond the classics which don't signify much to even the rather repulsive design decisions which predominate in this book selection indicate to me a set of literary and cultural values with which I do not jibe and which I share very few of.. out of 10.
>>
There pretty neat if you're interested in Miyazaki as a director. They're filled mostly with interviews and essays that he did around the time he was working on his films. Lots of magazine articles and such.

>>

The M&D on it's side was the one I read. I bought it for a dollar at Goodwill. It had a huge water stain inside and is overall pretty fucked up. The one on the dresser is a 1st printing, as are the rest of the hardcover Pynchons. If there's a hardcover and a paperback of any book, the hardcover is a good 1st, and a few are signed.

I'm working on it now, actually, with my dad (though he's doing most of the work, I'm trying to learn). It's really small though, so it'll only be for my very favorites. Only about half of my books are pictured, and my wife has about half as many as I do. We need as many bookshelves as possible
>>
>>9889000
Basically if I love a book and it becomes a favorite, I try to find a nice 1st printing of it, and signed if it's reasonable. I only started doing this recently, as I got a raise and started a second job. I used to only have a bunch of paperbacks from goodwill.
>>
>>9888472
Pretty jealous of your collection. How much do you think it has all cost?
>>
>>9889119
I try my best not to think too hard about that. Quite a bit man. I almost have the collection I always wanted, but it's not a cheap hobby. I'd rather buy books I will cherish than anything else, though. Just to put it in perspective, there are 4 books in there that combine to 1,300 by themselves -- but the rest of them I found great deals on. I won that Mason & Dixon 1st for literally 4 dollars on eBay because I was the only bidder. That's the way to go about collecting, keep an eye on ebay. Sometimes people have no idea what they have, sometimes nobody else notices a posting and you snag a great book for cheap.

>How do I into Philip K. Dick?
A Scanner Darkly is a great introduction to PKD. That would be my first recommendation. Other possible good first PKD books are The Man In The High Castle (if you like your alternative history stuff), or Ubik (if you don't give any shits and want to jump straight into the crazy). Do not - do *not* - start with VALIS. But once you've read a few PKD books, if you like him, you really really must read VALIS.

>Should I read The Urth of the New Sun after The Book of the New Sun, or is it a waste of time?
It's not a waste of time if you're interested in what happens next and want to learn about the world in more depth. However, I agree with the advice of another anon in that you should re-read the New Sun before moving onto Urth. I think that after completing the New Sun, if you enjoyed it, that's what you'll want to do anyway.

My second read-through of the Book of the New Sun was one of the most rewarding literary experiences of my life (and I hadn't read Urth).

>>
>>9891351
I've had a lot of these books longer than you've been on /lit/, I guarantee it. Way to project. I found out about these novels from Moore, Silverblatt, and by reading about authors and their influences. Funny, you really don't think you can keep big books nice? That's actually sad. IJ, The Recognitions, Underworld, and JR have been laid out flat on my bed and I didn't break the spines. The fact that people find this hard to believe is troubling, I've literally never broken a spine or felt the need to. I've read that copy of Infinite Jest twice, same with Gravity's Rainbow. Some of the hardcovers are falling inward, but the dj covers that. If you can list which books I've read and which I haven't, I'll sent you 5 books of your choice. Hint: I've read about 65% of them (mostly the long ones, friendo.) I'm interested in which of then you've read, and I'd be willing to bet any amount of money that I've read more than you.

Called out for what exactly? Keeping my books nice? I'm proud of that, so I don't feel insecure. I am troubled by the fact that people honestly believe you have to ruin your books to read them. I'd he glad to discuss the novels you imagine I haven't read? This happens regularly on this site, and I have a strong feeling that the type of person to claim someone hasn't read something because it's in good condition doesn't read at all. Also, many of those books have issues and imperfections, I just don't bend the spine. It's pretty simple, actually. You have to be actively trying to break it or just be completely retarded.

I actually wouldn't mind it. I buy all my books second-hand since I'm a poorfag and even though I've read IJ, it was in ebook form off of bibliotik. It is however on my modest but ever growing wishlist of books to own in paperback (I despise HBs) although too paranoid to give an anon from here my address.

This is pretty pathetic my man. Just because you don't read your books doesn't mean others don't. Like I said, I'd rather discuss those novels than argue about their condition and what that means to a troll.

Sure, most people around here take their recommendations from shitposts, but to assume that everyone does is a little presumptuous. Everything I've read on that first shelf has been worth it, and also led me to many of my favorites. I get what you mean, but I don't see why it matters - most of the people on this site don't read the novels they post about anyway. I come here for the rare conversation that's actually worth it. Like I've said many times, I'dove to discuss those novels, some of them are my favorites of all time, but I don't see the benefit in accusing people of not reading their novels. I'm sure it does happen, I just don't understand why anyone would spend the time and money collecting that many novels if they've never read, or felt passionate about, any of them.

Periodic Table is a collection of Primo Levi's sort of biographical short stories.
Gay and Catholic is unironically decent. Chaste lesbian talks about her conversion and other shit. Only gripe I have with it is something common to English-language Christian convert writers, where they use clever, and poignant, but intellectually frustrating or empty-feeling leaps in logic. I think they tend to be the kind of people who can be comfortable with making a conclusion (and commitment) even when only half the truth is visible to them. Like, they flee from the darkness immediately, and self-assuredly, toward some answer, before they can really be sure. They half-rationalize it, and are satisfied, and proud.

Stacking books is how you ruin them. I'd rather not. How is that deception? There are about 100 books stacked up behind the ones on the dresser, because I'm not worried about those being ruined. I've actually read those books, friend, and I enjoyed them. That's why they're there.

>>
>>9896540
It damages them, yes, but less than stacking them, which is by far the worst way to store books. Doesn't matter, they will only be like that until tomorrow when my new shelf arrives. Seems like a weirdly small thing to call someone out for. If I wanted to display books like that purposefully, I wouldn't do it with those Everyman's, I'd do it with some of the ones I think are honestly great and rare, but I'm the only one who sees it besides you anonymous strangers.

For example, I have some books not pictured that have been standing up on their own for 3 years that are perfectly tight and like new despite having been read. I have books that were stacked during that time that when I went to read them they were uneven and falling apart. If you research for even a few minutes you'll see that stacking novels, especially hardcovers, will ruin them in a relatively short amount of time.

I wonder what percentage of books in these threads are actually read and how many thousands of books have been taken off and dusted only to be photographed and returned?

like mathematically if we say 50% of /lit/ reads, and that's being very generous, can we then assue there are usually 100 images on average and about 200 critical replies each thread. and there are at minimum 4 threads a week. and each image probably contains about 10 books. and of the 50% of /lit/ that does read they probably only read half at most again that's being generous.

so if my math is correct that is 4000 books pictured a week and only about 100 will ever be read. Sad!

I buy them faster than I read them, but my pictures are a showcase of my taste, in want of recommendations, not a showcase of the money I've spent. The Prose Edda and the Edda are the same work, just different editions/translations. They were written by the Icelandic scholar Snorri Sturluson in the 13th century, in prose.

The Poetic Edda is anonymous, and written in verse.

Both cover similar territory, stories of Old Norse mythology and lore.

Erasing history is dangerous.
Here are my books. I'm poor and don't have a shelf. Also, I can't keep many, I exchange them for others whenever I finish. Unless I really like them, but this doesn't always work: I had to sell all of my BolaƱo, because it was expensive and I needed the money.
