Carver if you want Chekhov styled stuff in contemporary America.

Sozlheinitsyn if you want more slice of life stories but like the Russian settings.

William Carlos Williams if you want more stories about human life through the eyes of a doc.

Forgot to add, check out A Night In the Cemetary by Chekhov if you haven't read it already. It's billed as pulpy detective and horror stories from his early days when he was just paying the bills but there were actually very few 'genre' tales in there, most were just classic Chekhov stuff but shorter. I loved it.

For the plays, Shaw. For the stories I'm at a loss. Both Maupassant and Carver are good leads, however.

Sherwood Anderson

Thanks for all this. What about Tolstoy's short stories?
>>
>>9880178
Turgenev's Sketches From a Sportsman's Notebook
Bunin's Dark Alleyways
Early Hemingway
Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg Ohio
Mansfield's Garden Party

Really, though, Chekhov's stories are the high water mark. Read them all, then read his letters, then his diary and biography. I hate to tell you, but the best is behind you once you're through his stories.

Tolstoy's stories are some of the best, but he tends to strongly moralize. There's a wonderful letter from Chekhov to Suvorin about tolstoy (they met a few times) where he talks about his ideological break from Tolstoy's hypnotic effect.

Turgenev's plays are brilliant and underappreciated, sort of proto-Chekhovian
His novels are amazing too
>>
Ibsen
