Didn't know it was a GoT writer until after I started reading, but seriously the writing is magical.. the first chapter was actually quite lame, with the hammy into, but once you get into the narrative the imagery is absolutely captivating. There's plenty of tropes popping up but it's a seriously fun, dense book.

You can tell why he got work on Thrones though, there's some seriously beautiful scenes in here, particularly the chapter I mentioned.
