Shakespeare, Cervantes, Dante, Goethe. I prefer reading Milton or Dickens and English lit in general, but as far the definitive greats go I think that's it.
Would it be accurate to say that Toni Morrison is just as great as the likes of Dante or Goethe

Jk Rowling is blah too, but at least people don't push her to be a literary genius
Zadie Smith on the other hand is talked about being Joyce's successor, when she is no where close
Stephen King, Kafka, Proust, Rowling
I only feel confident about saying Homer, Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy.

Unironically can someone explain to me why Borges is held in higher esteem than Calvino. Clearly Calvino depicts a more aestheticised version of what Borges is trying to write, but I've never felt anything of Borges's writing to be as emotionally gripping/captivating as some of the stuff written by Calvino. Is it just cause I've read multiple works but Calvino (I think invisible cities is my favourite of all time) and I've only read Ficciones by Borges?

>he can't read Borges in his mother tongue
Oh, poor you. Stick to those shitty translations.
