Whenever I don't have anything I want to read but I'm looking for something to read I just look at my to-read-list and pick something. Also I write a short review (hidden so nobody else reads it unless they actively seek it) as notes for me to remember the book better. Plus you get an overview of what you've read and how you liked it

Better control of your catalog, better recommendations, more likely to come across somebody with interesting libraries. The stats it spits out about your library are also interesting. (And I think the site is less of an eyesore than Goodreads)

These. The lack of emphasis on social media is why LibraryThing is good, IMO. It's not suited for making new friends, exactly, but it's still pretty good if you already know people outside LibraryThing (a la /lit/, IRL, etc.).

I used to use it casually as a list app but with all the social stuff locked down but I try to no longer keep track of anything.

It's a decent place to find quotes though, usually one of the first results to come up in a search.

I use it to see what people who added me are reading. I do prefer LibraryThing though.

Nah I just maintain a txt file on my computer since I don't like socialising.

i've been using it for years. i've had some /lit/ folk added for like 2-3 of those years, and it's been charming seeing what they're reading and how their taste evolves. i enjoy keeping track of my reading statistics, and the yearly tracker is good motivation.

Why does "gay" make me laugh so much?

I can see the advantages of using it, as far as discovering new books through recommendations, keeping track of your "to read" list, etc. but I don't have an account.

What I don't like is the mostly awful people who review and vote on lists, and the idea of giving Amazon even more of a monopoly on ebook sales, not to mention the privacy issues.

Yes, some people like to support authors. Some prefer retail formatting, and some want books that aren't available on IRC, torrents, or lib sites.
