>American """literature"""

I can see how a lesser mind might single out that section, out of context, and attempt to trash an entire novel from it. Sorry it was too hard for you, anon. You'll just have to grind a little more.

>postmodern """"literature""""
fixed it for you
American literature from 1850-1969 is great

Melville is the only American novelist worth mentioning.

It was apparently enough for the pulitzer prize board to reject it.
This is a pretty gross passage. I'm not sure I want to read this book now
IS this real?

This really. Yes, it's gross. It's intended to be. The character who makes Brigadier Pudding (the Brigadier in this scene) undergo these violations (and they stretch way further than just coprophagia) is a pretty fucking vile arsehole. This is just the culmination of that process.tfw off-handedly learning of Pudding's death far later on

The bit about Kekulé's dream blew me away. Lots of good stuff in that book.
