Is Celine worth reading in translation? The quoted passage sounds pretty great, but I've heard from french people that he is untranslatable

He is good in translation (it won't get better than what OP posted), and god-tier in French.
In translation, he's losing most of what makes him really superior, but what remains isn't dull or bad either.
You would need huge footnotes to explain the nuances of one word out of three (while any French readers grabs it instinctively), or a genius translator that would rewrite the text freely, to get a more precise feeling of Céline's genius.
