Hemingway attempting stream of consciousness and not writing about a stream doesn't flow gracefully.
Tolstoy's essays are always tragic comedies or comedic tragedies.

I'm quite familiar with Russian history. I live in a country that shares a long border with them and I'm a history major. My grandparents come from an area that is now Russia so it's partly my heritage too and has shaped my culture.

I'm not sure what they call them in English but it's this rather large roofed enclosure where all the nearby buildings take their trash. I did leave a thank you note on the door but I do like your idea. If only I had any books I wanted to part with I did once leave a fully functional reading lamp next to it because I had no use for it anymore and someone took that.
