Most of the stuff Dawkins writes is deeply simplified and designed to give the impression he's giving you a working understanding rather than a simplified interpretation. If you want something still in the accessible to a lay person realm, but not fedora tipping populism mainstream, look up Steve Jones. He has his own biases and theories, but everyone does. Look up his Reith lectures if you're a podcast person (though they are dated now) or have this www.youtube.com/watch?v=bugu_9b0bTU if you're not sure you want to buy his books.

If you want to go deeper, Julian Huxley and TH Huxley were massive influences for both of their generations' understanding of eugenics and genetics and racial differences, and both again have two different perspectives and interpretations of the problem. Of all of them, Dawkins is probably closest to TH Huxley in his enemies, and TH Huxley is dumb/pol/. You kind of destroy yourself by association with the type of thing that should have died around 1930. Julian Huxley is probably one of the most important shifts though. His idea of clades meant people finally started looking to genetics not appearances across all biology.

More pop-sci on differences in mental illness and how the west sometimes forgets how applied science works: Crazy Like Us by Ethan Watters is about the US version of mental illness being exported. The schizophrenia problem is a longer running problem than the US being the lead in psychiatry, but most of the other people writing about that specifically more than twenty years ago are nutters like Laing or friends of Scientologists like Szasz where it's a lot of bias to read through. If you like /pol/ though, Laing or Szasz are a trip. Szasz has one where he sets out to prove psychiatry is the Spanish Inquisition.
