He basically refutes the Marxist narrative of the French Revolution. It was more a reaction to early capitalism than to feudalism. He also examines how the bourgeoisie as a class is difficult to define in that period, among other social groups Marxist historians are fond of.

I think that's what most historians think anyway. On another semi-related note, Marxists are fond of "lower class rising against upper class" but that doesn't exactly equal Marxism. Hell, you look at the last US election it was essentially right-wing blue collar workers vs. left-wing coastal elites (ironically, some of whom are Marxist themselves) and some visible minorities.

Well Cobban is the pioneer historian that first proposed what's considered the revisionist interpretation of the French Revolution. His work would later be heavily expanded upon by Francois Furet. There's a fair amount of historians following in their tracks now, but the popular conception and indeed a sizable amount of contemporary historians still follow the Marxist/Orthodox interpretation.
