not religious, so I'm not sure about the atmosphere of a religious reading group, but speaking up and being challenged etc. is how you deepen your knowledge about a text. some people might read things you never thought of and some people you might think are stupid in their reading. don't be afraid to speak your mind and don't be afraid to have your reading challenged. you'll be a better reader in the end and have lots to reflect on.
