I remember reading a great review of W&P translations when the Peepee-Voohoo translation came out, but I can't remember where it was. Among other things it drew attention to a translation of a description of trees (etc.) that lost all its impact in P-V.

Let's face it, P-V translates like a robot or a pair of OCD neurotics. Their painstaking translation of Doctor Zhivago is a complete joke in comparison with the original translation that was almost shot from the hip and still hit the target as good literature whereas PV used all the time and tools in the world only to miss the mark by a mile.

I liked Briggs. This edition has the French translated in the text so you dont have to go through the footnotes.

That entirely depends on your opinions of what a good translation is. One person's "autistic wrongheadedness" is another person's "exactitude and faith to the original".

I mean, if you think that the translator's task is to re-create a text in another language, then you have to like the P&V translations. If you think it's to create something that reads nicely, then you probably won't.
