>finish writing
>have to go back and edit everything

progress is progress friend. how many words? when you say "finish" do you mean you finished a session or writing or you finished a writing project?
What kind of writer doesn't have an editor?

editing is the fun part my friend
I always cringe at my original draft, I have a lot of fun going back to make the sentences sound nice, or coming up with more creative ways to express my ideas

Let's talk about this. "Editing" in writing didn't exist up until 20-30 years ago or so? I know DFW said that his agent or something edited Infinite Jest with him.
This is surely a post-modern phenomenon. Why do we find it so important? I feel like it's killing genuine writing, as in it puts much much more importance on the form than on the content

Trips of truth!

>not editing everything neurotically as you write
>being able to distinguish writing from editing
do people really do this?

You think the classics were just rattled off the top of peoples' heads first drafts? Or do you have no idea what the word editing means?
I also fundamentally disagree with the phony "first thought best thought" thing, because it takes well measured form to properly articulate intellectual concepts. Also form as separate from "content" (what defines content?) is major plebopoeia.

Editing has been around for a very, very long time anon...all the great masterpieces were edited.

works are never complete, only abandoned

I just write and write and write because the moment I stop to edit as I go I lose the thread and have to stop. Then I print off what I've put together, grab a red pen, and get to work making notes on what needs fixing.
