Thoughts on these books? imo thought they were extremely boring and overrated.

But that's just me. I don't really like the fantasy genre in general

You're the same guy who posts these every day, aren't you?
What exactly are you hoping to achieve?
It's like going to /pol/ and asking about what their thoughts on Jews are, or going to /r9k/ and asking for their opinion on women.

the accomplishment of harry potter is its role in the apotheosis of the disenchantment of the modern world, sapping even its speculative fiction of wonder. it truly made even magic seem non-magical
>>
I liked them a lot as a kid, but recently I realized I didn't actually like them for the fantasy or worldbuilding (which I always had trouble with) or even for the characters. It turns out I like them because I'm a sucker for whodunits. It scratches the same itch for me as Agatha Christie (and Sherlock Holmes but I won't even pretend they're on the same level).

Just post the pasta and get this thread over with

you can also go with this alternative approach, but my recommendation is to try it both,
only by approaching it at all the angles you can get the complete experience that such (very undervalued) masterpiece offers

(i´m sorry)
Does anyone else think Harry Potter has been one of the dullest franchises in the history of movie franchises? Each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

>a-at least the books were good though r-right
"No!"
The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

The book in your post. I was not paying attention to new books at the time that came about, but the publicity and hype reached such a peak that I became aware of Harry Potter.

I'm in the bookstore looking for something else. I see that book on a display table, pick it up, literally open it at random. I start to read. It holds my interest, and within a page or so there's a plot twist that surprised me and made me smile, and really made the situation and characters come to life.

I don't remember if I bought the book that day, but within a short time I read it and became a fan. It's not great literature, but I thought it was enjoyable.

I thought the story peaked in the climax of the fourth book, which, if memory serves, was a preliminary battle between HP and Voldemort -- an effective set-piece, in my view, that turned on the strength of their respective minds.

HP won, and it seemed to me then and still does that that was the true climax of the series set forth prematurely.

By the fourth volume the series to decline in quality, becoming ungainly and shaggy and losing the blessed concision that made the first book a pleasure to read. These tendencies gained momentum with each further book, until getting through the last volume was a much a chore as a pleasure, perhaps more of a chore than a pleasure.

On the whole, I think the series was an inspired effort, imperfectly executed, to be sure, and not great art but often great fun.
