To best get Shakespeare you should read a smattering of classics and Shakespeare's contemporaries AND modern works.
Shakespeare is not high art, it's mainstream work for it's time. Understanding the classics helps to understand the tradition that the man was drawing from, his contemporaries for the context he was working in and our modern works to see how similar and different our works are from each other.

For a real entertaining time read Byron. So many of his poems read like modern YOLO pop songs. People hae always cared about drinking, partying, picking up babes and regretting it all the next morning and doing it all over again

And read some Roman plays. Many of them are Big Bang Theory levels of shit. But understanding that helps us realise the depth and breadth of our literary history.

Just read the Canon already. I feel more intellectually motivated and inspired since I started reading Bloom.

Reading the canon can teach you about the greatest sources of influence in literary history and will give you deeper understanding into pretty much every cultural product you can consume.

People are more likely to have actually read contemporary works and it often has more relevance to your actual culture whereas the relevance you get from reading the canon is very meta.

Also, as a general rule, when you're picking the best of thousands of years of work, you're gonna have higher quality on average than picking from say the NYT bestsellers list any given year.

I dunno, I've just gotten to the point where I've consumed so much from contemporary works I sort of feel like I need to read the canon to really expand what I know to a substantial degree because so many references fly over my head.
