The Emigrants by W.G. Sebald. I knew I was going to like it but I didn't think I'd end up rating it higher than The Rings of Saturn. I can't think of a better book I've read in the last three years.

Before reading it I was thinking the best was going Herzog by Bellow but overall it was a letdown.

I plan to. There were parts of it that exceeded my expectations and even caused me to reevaluate aspects of my own life, but I think most of the time I wasn't in the right frame of mind to fully appreciate it. For now More Die of Heartbreak remains my favorite Bellow novel. Later Bellow just resonates with me more.

literal wizardchan? Poor parents

>>9815662
>you are projecting your insecurities so hard with this one.

This is the funny one though. Literally everyone I know who smokes in their early 20s has extreme insecurity in some area of their life (either about their intelligence or about their dating pool) and I have yet to meet an exception to this rule. The ones that grow up quit by 25, the other ones usually remain manchildren stuck (mostly by choice) in some shitty bluecollar job making 7 an hour, living in some motel somewhere until they die at 49 with no accomplishments in life.

Years ago this wasn't the case, when everyone smoked. But since only reddity retards smoke now, you can make generalizations.

It smells good when you're in a nice cigar shop. It smells bad when it's the scent of several days' worth of cheap cigarette smoke embedded in a jacket or scarf or hair.
>>
I can respect cigarette addicts because they have no illusions about the risks and don't cave to social pressure. I used to smoke. I still do, but only occasionally. In my experience people who are vociferously against smoking and go out of their way to criticize it are status-obsessed drones who lack taste and judgement.

oh yes, partaking of a relatively weak drug (less of a kick than a strong coffee) with extremely bad effects on your body is definitely the mark of people who have taste and good judgement. Switch the words associated with smoking with words associated with binge eating and you get this:

> I can respect binge-eaters because they have no illusions about the risks and don't cave to social pressure. I used to eat 5000 calories a day. I still eat a lot, but only 4000 cals now. In my experience people who are vociferously against being obese and go out of their way to criticize it are status-obsessed drones who lack taste and judgement.

Probably Of Human Bondage.

I tend to remember longer books better.
>>
>>9815790
You are not thinking very clearly because you're angry. I'm a casual smoker, I go through maybe a pack a month, and I enjoy it enough that the risks and social deficits are trivial to me. It's perfectly rational to be against smoking, but to crusade against it on an anonymous image board is insecurity typified.

Paradise Lost but I haven't finished that yet. So if that doesn't count then Jerusalem. Its the only other book I read this year and it took a while to get through.

I'm gonna mention a few because they e all been great for their own reasons.

Ulysses and The Sound and The Fury.

Voss by Pattrick White (seriously, read this).

Hesse's Narziss and Goldmond (I've read almost all his works, I would probably say this is my favourite, though Glass Bead is a contender).

The Iliad. No more said.
>>
>>9815816
>but to crusade against

pointing out a few reasons why a meme substance is a meme in a shitpost is hardly crusading

besides I don't give a fuck about anyone on this board that smokes (or who doesn't smoke for that matter), you can all die of hacking up a chunk of lung for all I care lol
