In college our handbook on American history was: Norton, A People and a Nation. A History of the United States
I quite enjoyed it. It's a pretty comprehensive and fair analysis of American history. This is rather difficult to find, as recent academic books on American history are quite politically biased.

As a non-native contributor, I would very much like to hear your eloquent elaboration on your apparent disapproval of rhe term 'tomes'

'tome' usually refers to ancient (metaphysical themed) books or scriptures rather than more common books.

Do you already know the basics, or are you totally new to American history?
If the former, these are two of the first books I would save in a fire
