DFW has the habit of going off in a long tangents about minor or barely mentioned characters in the middle of prose which don't add much even to the context of the scenario but adds humanity to his work.

Which I get is like 3/4 of his shtick, but at parts of IJ it clearly went overboard and failed to add anything, to the point of being cringe or groan-worthy.

That being said I love DFW.

i'm a dumbass and didn't "get" the title story but when i looked up an explanation i got chills for like a whole minute

It's actually a pretty comfy way to cry. You can't read while you're crying so you have to step away and really consider things until you've gotten over it. Then you come back right in the middle of things and start crying again. I'm usually alone when I read and it feels great to let it out. That said I've only ever cried a few times while reading, most recently from My Antonia.
