Freemasonry is less popular, the Great Awakening's killed off Christian Intellectualism in America (And the world, by proxy), and outright calling yourself an atheist is no longer taboo.

Because, like atheism or agnosticism it has no practices. It makes no claims about human behaviour, morality, good or evil.
The difference between the 18th century Deists and modern atheists is one of pure semantics, nothing practical.
