What did I just read? It just seemed like the ramblings of a bunch of lunatics for the most part, andeven when Socrates started to talk, he just discussed semantics. Seemed like a huge waste of time to me. Was it?

I was also disappointed by it.
Seems to me like the Symposium is an outlier, as far as style goes, and the rest of Platos works shouldn't be written off based on it.
>>
>>9800885
He didn't read Athenaeus of Naucratis.
He didn't know the banquets with old drunkards philosophers
>>
>>9800885
>>9800894
What the fuck is this shit opinion on about
>>
Did Alcibiades want to get bummed by Socrates and got rejected or was I just imagining it?

>What did I just read?
the Greek foreshadowing of the birth of Jesus
>Who, when he thinks of Homer and Hesiod and other great poets, would not rather have their children than ordinary human ones? Who would not emulate them in the creation of children such as theirs, which have preserved their memory and given them everlasting glory? Or who would not have such children as Lycurgus left behind him to be the saviours, not only of Lacedaemon, but of Hellas, as one may say? There is Solon, too, who is the revered father of Athenian laws; and many others there are in many other places, both among Hellenes and barbarians, who have given to the world many noble works, and have been the parents of virtue of every kind; and many temples have been raised in their honour for the sake of children such as theirs; which were never raised in honour of any one, for the sake of his mortal children.

>But what if man had eyes to see the true beauty—the divine beauty, I mean, pure and clear and unalloyed, not clogged with the pollutions of mortality and all the colours and vanities of human life—thither looking, and holding converse with the true beauty simple and divine? Remember how in that communion only, beholding beauty with the eye of the mind, he will be enabled to bring forth, not images of beauty, but realities (for he has hold not of an image but of a reality), and bringing forth and nourishing true virtue to become the friend of God and be immortal, if mortal man may. Would that be an ignoble life?'

Care to elaborate? I honestly want to know what's the thing I didn't get.
>>9800972
Yeap pretty much.
>>
Symposium is Plato at his best. The only superior work by him is Phaedo.
>>
>>9801385
Symposium is good and so is Phaedo, however The Republic is the big dog. More questions come from The Republic than both Phaedo and Symposium put together. Nothing brings about discourse like the Republic.
>>
The only parts worth considering are Socrates's speech about the Form of love, and the part by Alcibiades, which is comedy gold.

>Christfags appropriating superior works once AGAIN

>he writes off Sophocles' speech as tongue-in-cheek nonsense meant just to entertain and get giggles

>tfw no one else loves the phaedrus

>But he who, having no touch of the Muses' madness in his soul, comes to the door and thinks that he will get into the temple by the help of art-he, I say, and his poetry are not admitted; the sane man disappears and is nowhere when he enters into rivalry with the madman.
>>
>>9802044
Am I missing something or is Sophocles not in Symposium at all?
>>
>>9802071

He's not, I have no idea what the anon you're quoting is referring to.
>>
>>9802044
You mean Aristophanes, anon.
