Nihilism aside, is the desire to leave a long-lasting mark on culture, history or science that will outlive outlive you by lifetimes a valid goal, or is it, much like romantic conquest, a vapid and narcissistic dream that one is supposed to grow out of to reach maturity
It is narcissistic, but I reckon a lot of great men were. Is it vapid? Who's to say? If it's bordering on the delusional then it is vapid and insane. A truly ugly predicament to find yourself in when you would dare to be self aware.
a disgusting drow like yourself can give up hope on ever achieving anything of even local merit.

I genuinely have never been able to understand this desire. What does it matter when you're dead and when literally everything will turn to dust and all human accomplishments will vanish without a single trace?

What retard put a block of quartz on the table?
I just see it as profoundly irrational since you have no way of knowing if you will ever achieve said goal.
It's striving for something completely unrelated to your conscious experience.
