read it for a college lit class. i dont remember it being so bad. and good luck finding a man booker shortlisted novel that isnt about how evil straight white american men are

OP here, that's the reason I read this book. The problem is the other books we read are much better, quality wise. I'm wondering why the department is making us study such a poorly constructed novel.

I've literally read this book 3 times in two days trying to find anything positive about it because I really can't accept that universities can be this backwards.

I thought americans read shit like beowulf, chaucer, homer, joyce, etc in high school?
