2. The rise of "Influencer" marketing. With wide access to advertising revenues and easy quantification of impact, people can now securitize themselves as micro-celebrities. Think of Youtube (Instagram, Snapchat, etc.) as the UBER or AirBnb of attention capture.
3. Recursive-celebrity. Why is Jake Paul famous? People watch him because they want to be youtubers and need validation re:what they're missing out on by not being youtubers. The narrative action of a video linked above is literally a bunch of children building a poorly designed waterslide. But millions watch because to them he's showing an inside view of the youtuber life. Of course he's not because an inside view is about banal media metrics: CPM, engagement, views, and so on and so on
