Eveline has got to be the best Short Story I've ever read.
Metamorphosis by the big K.

Roald Dahl's The Hitchhiker
El Sur by Boar Haze
Read The Duchess at Prayer by Edith Wharton. It's the literary equivalent of the "when you see it you'll shit a brick" meme. Btw what's the unique value of the short story? Novels are good at elaborating character, which requires considerable development. Short stories are better for intricate or interesting plots is my thinking. It's a generalization I know. But short stories are like a fiction equivalent of a small essay. So the theme must be proportionately small. Do people even read short stories anymore? It seems that if people are going to read they want a novel.

This.
Also The Depressed Person by DFW
A Choice of Three by Alex Turner
Listened to it at 17 like 5 years ago and its a pretty good eye-opener to read/listen for a typical young man at that age.
I recommend the audio version, pretty comfortable and soothing narration.

I love short stories. About half of the books I've read this year are collections of short stories.
My favourite part is how I can jump around the book with impunity. I also really like how short stories can focus intently on one idea (Borges) or a scene (Hem or Buk).
(Yes I know I just mentioned Buk in the same breath as Borges, get over it.)
