i wanna start reading melville. should i start with short stories or jump right into moby dick?

Whatever you do don't read the abridged vers. of Moby-Dick, and imo go straight to the latter.

Grab him by the Dick. You've got nothing to lose.
His short stories are really beautiful pieces in their own right. Try Benito Cereno and Billy Budd. Of course, you'll eventually want the D.
You lose nothing and only stand
to gain no matter where you start. Melville is awesome.
I think Typee is a good start. It's his first novel and it has his prose and voice without all of the philosophizing of his later works.
