I'm interested in the nature of modesty.

I think false modesty is just inverted narcissism, and that true modesty doesn't exist.
"Genuinely modest" people are either silent (when self aggrandizement is on the table), qualifying (present their modesty with some self-awareness regarding it's impossibility, which is a skill more than a virtue, and as such requires tact to do so without putting figurative and/or literal scare quotes one's opinions), or, in what are sometimes the most interesting cases, self-sabotaging (actively seeking to look bad, where they could easily look good).

Not sure why I typed all that out. If you have an opinion I'd like to hear it.
