It's postmodern bullshit, you can't properly 'think for yourself' without reading other philosophers and commentators before, it would lead to wrong interpretations and, in extreme cases, stupid ideas ingrained in ones head like feminism. After reading a lot you can start thinking by yourself and making your own thoughts and opinions on various subjects. If you start 'thinking by yourself' before learning from others, you're bound to get a lot of things wrong.

You know how much those people studied about those subjects? I'm don't think people nowadays understand that there are people spending their whole lives to the study of Aristotle's works, Plato's works, Aquinas' works, they are persons whose knowledge far surpasses any of us, how can you 'think by yourself' while ignoring those specialists? I personally agree with you. I would say that consulting the "experts" such as great philosophers, scientists, researchers, etc and then forming your opinion based on that IS thinking for yourself. What people usually mean when they say to think for yourself is to not just blindly accept sensationalist news headlines you see on Facebook and the like.

Of course pseuds will praise old philosophers unconditionally. "Read the republic" Well what if I'm a mathematician? What if I don't even believe the questions in the republic can be solved a priori (or a postetiori without a magical machine)?

Ultimately, what it comes down to is that we live in a big, multipolar world. Maybe in 1100 we could all sit around the fire and wank each other off for praising Plato and Aristotle and the Bible. But now we have a million different campfires. One of them talks about butterfly genetics. Another about NFL. Another about topology. Many pseuds can't accept this, yet praise the older works unconditionally as a way to look intelligent.

The point here isn't that "ideology" is inescapable or that we always find ourselves under the influence of pre-established conceptual structures and discursive norms, but rather that the very possibility of "thinking for someone else" or "having someone else think for you" is incoherent. Nobody can think for you and you can't at all think for anyone else "anymore than you don a hat for another man".

It like asking someone to take a piss for you so that you don't have to get up. . . It unfortunately just wont have the desired effect.
