Do people take this song at face value? Without a grain of salt at all? I'm about 90% sure Lennon wrote the song to represent an unattainable utopian ideal. Music isn't a lecture, it doesn't always speak directly.

The song was Lennon's fantasy. He knew as well as anyone else it would never be reality. It was a sorrowful love song to a world that never was and never will be. Lennon even supported Ronald Reagan in the final years of his life.
