If I'm feeling like trashy historical fiction, Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe books are very light reading.

I prefer "non-fiction" accounts from officers, soldiers, military personnel in general. I've mostly read books made by my countrymen, Finnish books that is.

Storm of Steel for sure, Author survived almost the entire war as a frontline German infantryman, the unbelievable amount of shit that guy saw would be indescribable, except for the fact that he did in fact describe it in detail.
