Start with the Bhagavad Gita.
Then find a cursory overview of Hinduism, like a "For Dummies" book. Make sure actual Hindus are okay with it.
Then read the Upanishads.
Then Mahabharata.
Then the Vedas
Then the Ramayana.
>Qur'an
>Hinduism
Oh, its retarded

>Upanishads before the Vedas
why would you tell someone to do this?
>Then Gārgī Vācaknavī questioned him. ‘Yājñavalkya,’ said she, ‘since all this world is woven, warp and woof, on water, on what, pray, is the water woven, warp and woof?’
>‘On wind, O Gārgī.’
>‘On what then, pray, is the wind woven, warp and woof?’
>‘On the atmosphere-worlds, O Gārgī.’
>‘On what then, pray, are the atmosphere-worlds woven, warp and woof?’
>‘On the worlds of the Gandharvas, O Gārgī.’
>‘On what then, pray, are the worlds of the Gandharvas woven, warp and woof?’
>‘On the worlds of the sun, O Gārgī.’
>‘On what then, pray, are the worlds of the sun woven, warp and woof?’
>‘On the worlds of the moon, O Gārgī.’
>‘On what then, pray, are the worlds of the moon woven, warp and woof?’
>‘On the worlds of the stars, O Gārgī.’
>‘On what then, pray, are the worlds of the stars woven, warp and woof?’
>‘On the worlds of the gods, O Gārgī.’
>‘On what then, pray, are the worlds of the gods woven, warp and woof?’
>‘On the worlds of Indra, O Gārgī.’
>‘On what then, pray, are the worlds of Indra woven, warp and woof?’
>‘On the worlds of Prajāpati, O Gārgī.’
>‘On what then, pray, are the worlds of Prajāpati woven, warp and woof?’
>‘On the worlds of Brahma, O Gārgī.’
>‘On what then, pray, are the worlds of Brahma woven, warp and woof?’
>Yājñavalkya said: ‘Gārgī, do not question too much, lest your head fall off. In truth you are questioning too much about a divinity about which further questions cannot be asked. Gārgī, do not over-question.’
>Thereupon Gārgī Vācaknavī held her peace.
I gave up on the Upanishads around there t b h.

The hardcore autist mode is to read the major ones chronologically starting with the Rig-Veda.
The better path is to go;
1) Guenon - Introduction to the Study of the Hindu Doctrines
2) Upanishads
3) Bhagavad-Gita
4) Brahama-Sutras
After this you can choose to go back and read the Rig-Veda, go further on to Vedanta or the texts on Yoga like Patanjali's Yoga Sutras or the Yoga Vasistha. You also have different types of Hindu literature written in recent times such as the recordings of discourses by genuine ascetics like Ramakrishna and Ramana Maharshi or writings by formally educated intellectuals such as Vivekananda and Coomaraswamy.
There is a lot to choose from.
Read Vachanmrut.
There is even an app on play-store, than look up the references you need to in Gita etc.

I was born in a hindu family but It's hard to answer that question : -
Section 1 :
1.) The current state of hinduism in india is a "lie" .
2.) The current hinduism is completely controlled by the current government BJP/RSS(RSS controlling it).
3.) The hinduism portrayed by RSS has nothing to do with "hinduism" .
Section 2 :
1.)for the real indian people who know all the real history, The world "hinduism" sounds kinda lie/lame.
2.)aryans/westerners named the indus valley "indus valley" and 'Hindu' is derived from 'indus' .
Section 3 :
1.)For a real "indian" even the Geeta is unorthodox .
2.)Basically Geeta assimilated all the previous beliefs and added some of it's own and called it a "One" thing/ One truth.
Conclusion :
I would say shaivism is the oldest, the core, the real hinduism.
Keep these things into the mind while exploring Hinduism and you are good to go.
The conclusion sounds bs. Rest is alright.

The ramayana is where to start, it's highly readable, and is what the mario bros. series is based off of. Really fun, and there is even a good audiobook read by Ram Dass to go along.
