Do you bother with active reading or do you just consume the information? I think it's a waste of time in most cases but simultaneously I can't help but feel like I'm missing out on knowledge everyone else was able to extract by not doing it.

What do you mean by active reading?

If you aren't actively reading, you aren't reading at all. You're jus the looking at words and turning pages.
Pay attention. Give an effort. Nothing great comes free.

You can't do one without the other. So I have zero idea what you're talking about.
Active reading is the opposite of what it sounds like. Excuse for easily distracted ppl to play with highlighters and postit notes. Read normally first, mark up after if required.
