Are the Penguin Classics really that bad in terms of durability?

Oh man another of the same thread we've had twice this week. I sure do love browsing a catalog full of reposted threads.
They'll will last some 40 years if you take really good care of your books, most people don't, that's why they complain so much.
It's funny you ask this. I just finished Monte Cristo last Sunday. I got this book new, here is the battle damage.

Since this is such a long book, the thing was a little unwieldy to hold. My other Penguins don't have nearly as many creases as this one for what it's worth.

But they have some of the best translations out there, no?

I got Penguin's Count of Monte Cristo since everyone says it's the current definitive translation. I wasn't let down. Great stuff!

ironic is what you've said. why is caring for appearance when talking about penguin books? they are cheap and easily to damage.
also, what is wrong with their content?

>Buy Penguin Classics because that have appealing design
>Spine destroyed after the first read or two

Or
>buy penguin classics because they're cheap and handy
>beat them to shit as you happily toss them into your bag wherever you go and mark up the pages
>enjoy the hell out of them
Literally why would you care about the condition of your paperback books
Eh they're ok

mine didn't get so creased. The most was scuffing at the edges

It depends from book to book. Like they have the hands down best translation of Rabelais, The Story of the Stone, and the Decameron, but especially for philosophy they can have some really sub optimal cheap translations.
