This is sort of the point, though, isn't it? They were mainstream enough that the decision to follow up OKC with Kid A kind of deliberately decided for a large audience that it's better to have a good album than a radio single.
...which brings me to Absalom, Absalom! which also was published by a well established author who could have just written screenplays in Hollywood instead.
