The vast majority of people who name-drop that book just do so to virtue signal. It's their way of signalling that they care about the plight of impoverished 3rd world Muslims without having to know anything about Afghanistan or the deeper reasons for US involvement in the middle east.

Yeah. Entire book is supposed to be Hosseini saying "SEE MUSLIMS AREN'T ALL BAD GUYS".

What annoys me the most about it is the way he writes about Afghanistan. Whilst America is treated as a shitty, secondary place, in Afghanistan the "ground hums with energy" and gay shit like that. America, on the other hand, is this bland and boring place that Amir just happens to end up in. I've never understood the obsession that writers have with the exotification and mystification of literal third-world shitholes purely because they're poor and war-torn - as if there is some sort of lost magic to all those places when really we all know that it's always been a shithole.

The entire second year of A-level Literature is pure propaganda. The first year studying Keats and Tess is much better.

I don't like /pol/ either, and I don't get the whole "muslims r evil" view, but Hosseini does try to bash you over the head with "muh poor afghanis". The moral dilemmas in the book are so clearly defined and lacking in subtlety that you'd think it was written by a machine. There is no nuance to the history of Afghanistan, nor to the wars fought there. Hosseini is neither historian nor author.
