One strategy for those of us with less than god-tier, stellar intellects may be to take a hedgehog approach -- dig deep in a relatively narrow vein.

A Waiting for Godot approach, if you will, vs a Ulysses approach. Iow, instead of a vast Joycean panoply of characters and ideas, focus on a little postage stamp of turf. Make a virtue of necessity.
