New Benatar drops today.
Who /HYPED/?
Did all the Benatar fans kill themselves?

my sides
Even though I'm an antinatalist I think Benetar's rhetoric is pretty terrible.
>>9701329
How so?
>>9701329
And what antinatalist rhetoric is good?
>>9701651
the stuff about consent and disutility. Asymmetry isn't argued very well is all
literally, literally who?
>>9701750
You don't need to argue for asymmetry directly since you can just show how no one in their right minds will deny it, eg.

I think his approach is interesting since it caters to different intuitions than the 'woe is me' approach. Most antinatalists just appeal to emotion and thereby only preach to the choir.

Benatar is basically the only active/respected academic who takes an antinatalist stance, which makes him an interesting lad.

>Bookdepository started shipping a couple weeks ago, already read it..
Please give us a quick rundown/review, anon
How can he go from writing one of the greatest (albeit flawed) modern philosphy books "Better to Have Never Been" and then write some mediocre MRA bullshit?
>>9702523
I mean it's basically just a spelling out of his views/a defense of philosophical pessimism written with his basic academic style.
This review gives a good rundown

You can't shame away real issues.

was pretty popular in the 80s
did "love is a battlefield"

I agree that is the worst you can do. Its just that I used to get caught in a trap where the cconversation would go something like this
>no pain is good
>absence of pleasure is not bad
>hey wait a second, why not?
>because you cannot deprive a nonentity
>you can't spare a nonentity either
>draw a blank
Now I speak in terms of a single potential entity which as it does not exist is automatically spared and obviously cannot be deprived until it first comes into existence.

I have a lot of sympathy for philosophical pessimism but I just can't see how the asymmetry thesis can work.
>>9704519
Why not? Pleasure is the amelioration of desire. They even knew that 500 years before Jesus came along.
