Is reading Harry Potter in another language literary? There's translations of HP in ancient Greek, Latin, and other languages. Of course, reading it in English wouldn't be, but it's not the same in another language.

Can someone post this site which shows certain passages of the japanese translation? You know the one

sounds like a fun way to get stronger in another language for sure op good idea

My german teacher recommended it. She said the grammar and the vocabulary is simple enough.
A nice place to establish a "beachhead" into a language.

Nope. Try Symphonic Rain as your first story in Japanese.

Being completely serious, reading children's literature (especially one you are familiar with) is a great way to start reading in a new language.

Also, read Japanese light novels from anime you like (Suzumiya Haruhi and My little sister are breddy good) to get better.

I read the first couple of books in Japanese. The language is simple so it's easy to read.

Though, the problem was that it was too easy. The sentences are never complex or interesting in terms of language. Once you're past the beginner stage there's not much use to reading them, in terms of language-learning.

And anyway, if you're studying a new language, shouldn't you want to read things written in that language? There's not much point to learning a whole language just to read translations of things you could already read.
