Svidrigailov is clearly supposed to be a reflection of Raskolnikov, but his character seems to be a lot deeper than just an evil version of Raskolnikov. Particularly, his sudden appearance in the first part of the book while Raskolnikov is pondering his mother's letter (before Raskolnikov would have met him), and his later appearance in Raskolnikov's room while Raskolnikov himself was asleep seem very odd. One of my professors told me that there was a certain reading of the book that he wasn't a real character but a figment of Raskolnikov's diseased mind, which seems like it could be accurate. What does /lit/ think?

I haven't read C&P, but you're wrong.

this is what you get when you over-analyse book. Beware of the academia kids.

He's like Satan or something.
>>
>>9699566
It's not that unthinkable, Svidirgailov talks about how he's visited by ghosts and acts like some sort of demon

>>9699682
wew lad enjoy your cultural marxism m8y

Why does this board have to be so terrible
>>
>>9699536
Is it really more believable to think he is an elaborate part of rodyas mind, or just a person on his life? There are many clues pointing to his being real, rodya speaks of him to his sister and mother there is far more evidence pointing to his being real than a figment of his imagination.
This is the kind of thinking that can totally disrupt the ultimate meaning of a book. You miss the point and wonder about some triviality like wether svidrigliov was real. What difference would it make if that were true? None? Then it's pointless to ponder
>>
>>9699800
Svidrigailov not being real would significantly alter the book's meaning
>>
>>9699811
How? That he was a manifestation of rodya meaning that his mother's letter was tainted by his mind and all subsequent mentions and interactions were altered by how cray cray he was? You would be bending over backwards to make this theory of yours plausable. Why not write a fan fiction of it? That is the territory of basterdisations such as this
>>
>>9699536
What? Why would it say that he killed himself if he wasn't real? And the fact that he offered to pay for Polya and Kolya's orphanage fee? And that he held conversations at a lounge with Rodya? Rodion Romanovich would have to be pretty sick to be dreaming all this. Also, if I spoiled something for you, kys my man.
>>
>>9699794
It's not terrible, we're simply people who read for fun. We like to analyse and think about books, but we don't go for the academia trap.
>>
>>9699536
his suicide definitively is the best bit of the novel
>>
>>9702534
Why?
>>
>>9701607
There is absolutely no analysis on this board

Svidrigailov serves as an emblem for the invasive "western" ideology Dostoevsky wants to expose just as Razumihin serves as the traitional, Christian, Russian way of life. Raskolnikov is torn between the two, hence his name (schismatic). What or who can replace God when God is dead? Like Nietzsche, Dostoevsky saw the coming of all the great nihilistic and materialistic philosophies and ideologies as a creeping death, though he came to the answer of a robust, Christian traditionalism unlike Nietzsche, and he adresses Nietzsche through Rodya in his ubermensch obsession, permission of materialism and the socialists, rejection of Christ. Razumihin, and Sonya, and Christ are eventually accepted by Rodya as Svidrigailov, Napoleon and the coming nihilism of the west are rejected by him in his redemption.
Back to Svidrigailov's suicide, before killing himself he claimed he was going to America, again linking the Western Death.
