What languages are you learning? How?
Recommended methods/apps/etc?
Could you have a decent conversation in a language you've learned by yourself?

I'm practicing German with Lingvist (Duolingo alternative). What are some good German novels I could read for practice? Or movies/series to watch?

Kafka, Hesse and Remarque are good.
I enjoyed Goodbye Lenin and Downfall as well.

I have recently graduated second level education so I'm maintaining French until I get into university.

I'm just reading some books mainly. I'm reading Satre's Huis Clos. For aural work I watch children's cartoons. Seriously, they help. You should find some German cartoons. The language isn't too complex and it feels great to understand something in a foreign language when you watch one regardless of it's complexity.

I had to learn how to have a basic conversation on topics such as family, school, friends, hobbies, plans for the future, etc as part of my French studies.

Good German series is Generation War and Der untergang is a good movie. Helped me when I was learning German.
Has anyone used Rosetta Stone to learn a language? Was considering getting it to learn Russian

To add to >>9698451

Lola Rennt, Auf der anderen Seite, Das Boot, Die Blechtrommel, Victoria

Are there some "definitive" texts for learning French? e.g. Wheelock's Latin. I have no internet at my place and can't look anything up, so dictionaries and such are welcome too.

I don't think so and if there are I'm not aware of any. If you know no French at all I would suggest perhaps buying a textbook you would use at school and using apps like Duolingo. I did a quick search and this seems like a good textbook: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Alter-EGO-Livre-LEleve-CD-Rom/dp/2011558107/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1498835207&sr=8-2&keywords=alter+ego+1
Don't ah buy it though without searching yourself, I'm not a French teacher.

If you can somehow get audiobooks in French and their physical form too, that would be great to improve your listening and speaking skills.

You can watch "Stromberg", which is a german copy of The Office, and also "Der Tatortreiniger", which is about a crime scene cleaner, who gets into absurd situations in his job.

I'm learning french using Duolingo and Memrise. Also I got myself a used copy of a grammar book to read a chapter here and there and take the tests, that are in there.
Also I'm listening to French chansons (or rather try translating the lyrics, I'm still far from understanding while listenening to them) by Georges Brassens, Charles Trenet, etc. and the French versions of Disney Songs.

If you want some german artists:

Lena, Wincent Weiss, Tim Bendzko, Philipp Poisel, Adel Tawil, Johannes Oerding, Mark Forster, Max Giesinger (horse shit pop music)
K.I.Z., Trailerpark, Alligatoah, Antilopen Gang, Dendemann, Kollegah, Bushido, KC Rebell, Kontra K (Rap)
AnnenMayKantereit, Funny Van Dannen, Olli Schulz, Tomte (Singer-Songwriter, Acoustic etc.)
Rammstein, Callejon (Metal)

>What languages are you learning? How?
French atm.
>Recommended methods/apps/etc?
I think there are many ways, I personally use Memerise/Duolingo to form a solid foundation and write down all the vocabulary that I have problems with. Next I'm planning to translate "The Stranger" by Camus since it's relatively simple prose
>Could you have a decent conversation in a language you've learned by yourself?
Am fluent in english, german and dutch, although not exclussively self taught
>What are some good German novels I could read for practice?
dude, read some german farytales by the brothers Grimm, they are awesome and originally meant for children so they should be relatively easy
>>

>brothers Grimm
Yes, they're excellent. But please be aware that today no-one talks or writes like them anymore.

This summer I'm spending 1 hour each day on Duolingo learning french. I had french in HS, but it's been left untouched for 7 years now...
