What does /lit/ think of Henry Miller?
He has become my favorite writer. I justed started reading seriously so that may change, but, to me, he's a great -- a true successor to Whitman.

big sur was absolute garbage.

Is that where you started? Why not Tropic of Cancer?

i live in california and i like big sur so i thought it would be interesting. it wasn't, really.
is tropic of cancer better?
I finished reading Tropic of Cancer recently and loved it. The prose has that ecstatic, Whitmanian (as another anon said) quality that's really captivating. It was a bit self indulgent (then again I think that's kind of the point) but mostly brilliant, and also pretty funny.

A fantastic writer, one of the best to come out of the US. He saw the ecstatic and sublime within the mundane, much like his hero Matisse.

He's fine when he's not doing the apocalyptic prophet stuff, and his California books are better than the Tropics and the trilogy.
>stuck in a room for hours with a new girl today
>she brings up languages and mentions she wants to learn arabian
>i can see that she is immediately mortified at her mistake but too embarrassed to self-correct it
>idgaf, shit happens and i'm high on cocaine anyways
>15 minutes later she mentions that the crucible is her favorite drama (srsly?)
>see my opening to level the playing field
> — right, right, henry miller wrote that....and tropic of cancer too, I say.
> And she, after a moment's pause — YES! isn't he great?
Lauren, if thou lurke, hear this!
You are a lady of most excellent fancy: thicc & enduring.
Only seventeen, yet the Muse calls:
I'd stay 'twixt your thighs
till East meets West,
and follow your eyes,
from cavern to crest.
Pools of tide,
no measure to man,
till rose-fingered dawn
raises her hand.
Wet with your blessing,
and not nearly wed;
hand me a towel,
for you hath bled.

Generally too pornographic for my taste. But his prose is fantastic. Smile at the foot of the ladder was fantastic.
