People spend large portions of the book having meaningless sex and taking drugs for no good reason.

Slothrop's journey ends with him realising everything is meaningless and unconnected ('just feeling natural' - escaping paranoia), and falling apart because he can't handle the information - this is explained in the 'antiparanoia' passage.
