The same happens with popular spreading of natural science ideas really. People like Dawkins, Lawrence Krauss, Brian Greene and Tyson are awful scientists at worst and mediocre at best. Their texts are also fraught with pseudo-ideas and they ripple empirical positivism whenever they drop.

Nevertheless, I still think it's important for these people to be around. Most of the population are not ever going to come into contact with philosophical ideas for example, unless they listen to Alain talking about them. Popularity-seeking "experts" are not there to be precise, not even to be completely correct in their assertions, they are merely the first, very rough stepping stone that only serve the purpose of making people realize there even is a stepway to be followed. Some will climb and some would remain pseuds, and it is worth to create a lot of pseuds IMO, if we'll have at least a little bit more people climbing.
