How can people read series, especially ones that are 4+ books

How can people read series, especially ones that are 4+ books long? I have a big enough backlog and want to read as much as possible, without spending 7 books on one story.

Normally people read because they enjoy it, not because they're trying to clear a 'backlog', so the problem doesn't come up. Reading is fun, and it's very weird to turn it into work. That said,

I would consider Kerouac's major novels to be a series.
