I doubt a woman of her time defined female independence in exactly the same way a woman would today. Anyway, it isn't that Elizabeth doesn't want a man; she wants someone worthy of her. She specifically admonishes Charlotte Lucas for marrying an unworthy man for his money, and Lydia gets in trouble snagging an unworthy poor man.
