> implying you're not a dumb cunt
The forewords are where somebody discusses the book, spoilers and all. How the fuck do you experience a sense of genuine surprise over this unless if you're a retard?
>reading the intro
but to be fair, we all make that mistake once.
1984 was the first and last intro for a book i ever read. spoiled in the first two fuckin sentences.
I always read the forward/introduction in foreign books which rely heavily on a cultural background which I lack. I read them to ground myself in the context of the book and glean a little bit about the society and author it came from.
>Book starts with an "author's note"
>It describes the author's struggle with writing a book and their fateful meeting with a real person who narrated an amazing true story which the author can't wait to share
>It's all lies
>The introduction is nothing but lies to hook the reader into reading fiction
Absolutely fucking disgusting.

I dunno, it was brilliant when it was done in Lolita. Really helped establish the element of the unreliable narrator as well as giving a sense of realism to Humbert Humbert's position in prison.
If it's a book important enough to bother reading the introduction, you probably know most of the important plot points already anyway.

Reading the introduction actually hinders my experience when reading fiction: if I read it, I don't want to bother with studying the detail. That can come later, AFTER I finish the novel myself.
If a book can be 'spoiled' it is a bad book.
