Fichte was fucking dope. His System of Ethics was written in that awful dry circumlocutory style typical of Kant imitators, and Fichte himself overstated the Kantian genetics of his project to gain credibility, but he planted the seeds of revolution. He was one of the first to argue that certain metaphysical postulates need to be taken as an item (glaube) of faith, recognizing that skepticism is unavoidable and bringing existential concerns to bear on his metaphysics. He was also the guy who actually put the thesis-antithesis-synthesis formula into writing as such, even though it gets attributed to Hegel all the time. He was an early spinozist and his entire system is predicated on a monism of "the original I" which found its way through Schopenhauer to Nietzsche in the form of "the will". And he even outlined what he thought of as pathologies of morality that are distinctly recognizable as master and slave moralities, including a bang-on description of ressentiment (although I forget what he calls it).

I think Fichte was a pussy and fucked up on selling himself and his philosophy really badly, but he also got dicked over by fate pretty badly, sitting so close (and looking so alike) to Kant and then being overshadowed by Hegel. He also got chased out of university for being a crypto atheist or whatever, so there's that too. But he had a lot of really clever ideas that show up again and again in the writing of later German philosophers. His wissenschaftslehre is really worth a read for a student of the history of philosophy.
