I'll be traveling solo for a month soon. It'll most likely be quite introspective. I'll drink in bars, cafés and eat in restaurants alone.
Whilst I want to see the sights and watch the world go by I would like one or two books that will not only entertain, but possibly add something to the trip.
Is there anything you would recommend?

I read the Melancholy of Resistance and Satantango while I was bumming around the world on the skin of my teeth. I wouldn't bring any books unless you're going to start in Africa, most major cities have a bookstore that will cater to your language and I'd recommend going in not knowing what you want. Every time I think I'll enjoy a book while traveling, it never matches my mood, but I always find the right books when I don't know what I'm looking for (while traveling).
Buy a couple on your journey.

It'd be too much of a depressing read. Hopefully this trip will be the start of changing that.

The savage detectives, Roberto Bolano. It's about two mexican hobos/poets that go arround wandering aimlessly around europe, mexico and africa while reading obsessively and generally trying to act like Rimbaud.

I need to get away, I have strained or ruined all of my relationships. I think it'll be a make or break thing.
Thanks for the suggestions so far, I'll look into them all.

I went around Europe for a few months on my own when I was 17, wandering around a city with no dependents and not having to speak for days if I don't want to was wonderful. Some of my favorite memories was finding a nice spot with a view of the cities people and just read some books. It was the first time I was ever on my own with nobody waiting on me
