Sophists never denied reality they just thought you could never really describe it because language is inherently limited.
From what I've read of Platonic dialogues Socrates is just another Sophist. All of his 'victories' involve just twisting linguistics to suit his purpose which is what the sophists are doing.

Socrates asks a guy what piety means and than Socrates proceeds to retextualize the word. He keeps playing these word games until the guy gets sick of his sophistry and leaves.
