Phaedo discussion thread. Any thoughts, or insights? I found Socrates' to be pretty darn Stoic. Could he be considered the first practicing Stoic? I mean of course the Stoics descend from his teachings, but he had unwavering principles, a commitment to being virtuous, and an indifference to death. I think that argument could be made. Tell me what you think.

Thanks for your reply, you have certainly come off as far more intelligent than the multitude. I pray to God that you still have voting rights.

I don't think that I'm well-read enough to provide any real insight but I think that stoicism places too much emphasis upon the conception of a discrete "self"'. Socrates' aim was to discover and enlighten through opposition, to engage in the pursuit of truth. But is the mind really an ultimate truth that must be protected? Without adequate connection with the emotions, man has a greatly diminished capacity for beauty/truth. Understanding is superior to repression.

I'm not so sure that the Stoics "repress" emotions, however, they do understand and control their emotions, especially when things are out of their control. Your reply brings up interesting points, how do we define beauty and truth, and how do we define understanding in relation to Socrates' understanding of the terms, and as well as the Stoics understanding. I don't think the two are dissimilar.
