Quality of prose can be compromised in certain cases. In Crime and Punishment the disorganization of character's voices and inclusion of little stories and episode create and effect of prose being unable to sustain itself under the heavy press of it's subject - a dialogue with devil.

Though cases like this are not often, so quality of prose is always very valuable, but you shouldn't be pedantic about it
